The Cannabis plant, simplified, has two species: Hemp, and Marijuana. Hemp generally contains 20% CBD, and less than .03% of THC. Marijuana generally contains more than 20% THC, and 10%+ CBD.

CBD was made federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, which also raised restrictions on the growth and transport of the hemp plant. The bill made both hemp and CBD legal as long as it contains 3% or less of THC.
